Thomson Reuters / Rural India Market Entry

In 2006 the Reuters internal innovation program provided license to employee Amit Mehra to explore his vision for a Reuters service that provided struggling small farmers in India with the timely information they need to increase crop yields and secure their best market price. The result was the conception of Reuters Market Light (RML), a real-time market data and agricultural tips service provided via mobile phone that supports customers to improve cultivation practices, track local market prices, and eliminate exploitation by middlemen. The service customizes information for customers according to their crops, region, and local language, and is now used by more than a million farming households.

The Next Practice was engaged in 2007 to work with the RML team to develop their market entry plan, optimize their offer and financial model, and document the new company’s business processes. Following conclusion of these engagements, TNP partners helped the new company’s managing director to secure first round external investment.
